Deck Painting FAQs
What homeowners want to know before we paint or stain their deck, from drying times to saving old, weathered boards. Have another question? Call us.
Call (757) 751-0284 Is paint or stain better for a deck?
For the walking surface, a solid or semi-transparent stain usually holds up better, since paint can peel under foot traffic. Paint works well on railings, spindles and trim, so many decks get stain on the floor and paint on the rails.
How long before we can use the deck again?
Light foot traffic is usually fine after about 24 hours. Give it 48 to 72 hours before putting furniture and the grill back, and a little longer in cool or humid weather.
Can my old gray deck be saved?
Usually, yes. Washing and sanding take off the gray, weathered layer and bring back the wood underneath. Any rotted or cracked boards should be replaced first, and we'll point those out at the estimate.
Can you recoat a deck that's peeling?
Yes, but the loose coating has to come off first. We scrape and sand the peeling areas so the new coat bonds to solid wood instead of flaking off with the old layer.
How often does a deck need to be redone?
In Hampton Roads, plan on recoating every 2 to 4 years. Decks in full sun or with heavy traffic need it sooner, and shaded decks can usually go longer.
Can you just wash my deck without painting it?
Yes. If the coating is still in good shape, a pressure wash may be all your deck needs, and we'll tell you if that's the case. If your fence could use work too, see our fence painting page.
